Vikram Nair, 34, is a logistics planner who earns $7,000 a month, and his wife Divya, 32, is a teacher who earns $5,000. After CPF they take home $9,600 a month, spend about $5,900 and save the rest. Their daughter was born in July, and an adviser has since shown Vikram a whole life plan with $400,000 of cover, which leads him to ask how it compares with a term plan for the same sum.
Life insurance in Singapore is sold in two main forms. A term plan covers the insured person for a fixed period and pays nothing if they outlive it. A whole life plan covers them for life, and part of each premium builds a cash value.
Vikram is a male non-smoker who will be 35 at his next birthday. For him, the median term plan charges $368 a year for $400,000 of cover over a premium term of 21 to 25 years, and the median whole life plan paid over the same period charges $8,636 a year. Over 25 years, that is $9,200 against $215,900. The sections below compare every plan quoted for him, what the whole life premium buys beyond the cover, and what the difference is worth in years of household spending.
What Is The Difference Between Term And Whole Life?
A term plan pays the sum assured if the insured person dies or becomes totally and permanently disabled during the term. It has no cash value, so a policy that ends or lapses returns nothing. Some term plans pay a sum that falls each year, which is called decreasing term.
A whole life plan pays the sum assured whenever the insured person dies. Many also pay a multiple of the sum assured until a set age. The premium also builds a cash value, part guaranteed and part illustrated at rates the insurer does not promise.
Vikram wants the $400,000 to replace his income until his daughter finishes university and the flat loan is repaid. Both fall within the next 25 years, when he will be about 60.

How Much Would $400,000 Of Cover Cost Him?
According to premiums published on compareFIRST, the life insurance comparison portal run by the Life Insurance Association Singapore (LIA), 46 plans were quoted on 13 September 2026 for a male non-smoker aged 35 next birthday, with a sum assured of $400,000 and a premium term of 21 to 25 years. Of these, 23 were term plans and 23 were whole life plans. That is Vikram's profile.
The table orders the plans by annual premium and shows the lowest, median and highest in each group. The 25-year total is the annual premium multiplied by 25.
| Plan Type | Plans Quoted | Lowest A Year | Median A Year | Highest A Year | Lowest Over 25 Years | Median Over 25 Years | Highest Over 25 Years |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Term | 23 | $321 | $368 | $2,516 | $8,025 | $9,200 | $62,900 |
| Whole life | 23 | $5,240 | $8,636 | $11,200 | $131,000 | $215,900 | $280,000 |

The three cheapest term quotes, at $321 a year, were all decreasing term plans. Among the term plans, the dearest cost 7.8 times the cheapest for the same sum and age, or $54,875 more over 25 years ($8,025 + $54,875 = $62,900).
The whole life figures are for the basic sum assured of $400,000. Some of those plans pay two to five times that sum before a set age, which raises their premium. At the median, the whole life plan would take about $720 a month of the couple's savings, against about $31 for the median term plan.

What Would The Whole Life Premium Buy Beyond The Cover?
compareFIRST publishes a benefit illustration with each whole life quote. It shows the cash value the policy is illustrated to have at years 5, 10, 20 and 30, at the two rates set by the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS): 3% and 4.25% a year. Only the guaranteed figure is promised.
The figures below are the median of the 23 whole life illustrations at Vikram's age, sum and premium term. Each column is a separate median, so the row does not describe one plan.
| Policy Year | Premiums Paid At The Median | Guaranteed Cash Value | Illustrated At 3% | Illustrated At 4.25% |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 10 | $86,360 | $21,600 | $24,602 | $26,444 |
| 20 | $172,720 | $65,600 | $84,523 | $121,776 |
| 30 | $215,900 | $123,200 | $190,129 | $272,334 |

The median distribution cost across the same 23 illustrations was $19,574. Distribution cost is the amount the illustration attributes to selling and advising on the policy. If Vikram surrendered the policy in year 30, at about 64, the guaranteed part of what he would receive is $123,200 on $215,900 of premiums.

What Is The Premium Difference Worth If Invested?
The median whole life premium is $8,268 a year more than the median term premium ($368 + $8,268 = $8,636). Invested each year for 25 years at an assumed 4% a year, $8,268 grows to about $344,000.
That estimate assumes a steady return, which markets do not deliver. The whole life guaranteed cash value, $123,200 at year 30, carries no market risk. For Vikram, the comparison sets a guaranteed but smaller sum against a larger sum that depends on returns.
What Would Each Option Cost In Years Of Spending?
A premium is money that would otherwise be saved. For a household spending the Singapore average of $71,172 a year, according to the Department of Statistics (SingStat) Household Expenditure Survey 2023 (checked 30 September 2026), the 25-year totals convert as follows. The Nairs spend about $5,900 a month, close to that average of $5,931.
| Plan | Premiums Over 25 Years | Years Of Household Spending |
|---|---|---|
| Cheapest term | $8,025 | 0.11 years, about 1.4 months |
| Median term | $9,200 | 0.13 years, about 1.6 months |
| Median whole life | $215,900 | 3.0 years |
| Dearest whole life | $280,000 | 3.9 years |

The couple save $3,700 a month, or $44,400 a year. The median whole life premiums over 25 years equal nearly five years of their saving, because $215,900 ÷ $44,400 = 4.9. For a household saving towards an early stopping age, that moves the date its savings can pay for it.

What Are The Limits Of This Comparison?
The quotes cover one profile, a male non-smoker aged 35 next birthday. Premiums are lower for women and at younger ages, and higher for smokers, so Divya's own cover at 32 would cost less than the figures above. Each plan's own terms, such as the age cover ends, riders and conversion options, differ, and the product summary states them.
The comparison applies to cover being bought. It does not assess policies a household already holds, where the premiums already paid and any cash value change the sums.
Which Households Does Each Option Suit?
Vikram buys a term plan for $400,000 at close to the median premium of $368 a year, with cover to about 60. He puts the $8,268 a year he does not spend on whole life premiums, about $689 a month, into the couple's investments for the same 25 years.
Term cover suits households whose need for life cover ends at a known date, such as when savings can pay for the household or when a mortgage is repaid. Whole life cover suits households that want a guaranteed payout at death at any age and value the guaranteed cash value. The choice depends on how long the household needs cover and what it would do with the difference in premium.
