Frequently asked questions

What is my FIRE number?
The investment balance that pays your spending until age 90. It falls the later you stop, since a shorter retirement supports a higher withdrawal rate.
How much do I need to retire in Singapore?
About 25 times your annual spending for a 30-year retirement, and about 28.6 times for 50 years. At S$4,200 a month, that is about S$1,260,000 to S$1,440,000 in today's dollars.
Is the 4% rule right for Singapore?
It suits a 30-year retirement, the span William Bengen tested on US data in 1994. A retirement that starts at 40 lasts 50 years, so this calculator uses 3.5% for it.
Does CPF count towards FIRE?
Not before 55, since most CPF savings cannot be withdrawn until then. This calculator leaves CPF out, so it does not give an age that is too early.
